Frequently Asked Questions:

How do I choose the best plan for my pet?

Deciding which plan you should get depends on many factors, like your pet’s age and breed, your budget, and the level of coverage they need. If you’re looking for robust coverage that reimburses you for accidents, illnesses, and much more, check out Complete CoverageSM. If it’s just accidents and injuries you want covered, or if you’re working with a tighter budget, consider an Accident-Only plan. Once you choose your plan, it’s up to you how you customize your annual coverage limit.

How much do ASPCA® Pet Health Insurance plans cost?

Pet insurance plans have varying costs based on several factors, including plan choice and where you live as well as the species, breed, and age of your pet. With ASPCA® Pet Health Insurance program, you can also customize your plan’s annual deductible, reimbursement percentage, and annual limit to better fit your budget and coverage needs. Get a free quote to see what your monthly premium would be without any obligation to enroll.

Will my monthly payment go up?

Monthly premiums (aka what you pay each month) are based on a few different things, including your pet’s age. As you renew your policy every year for your pet as they age, their premium may increase to account for the higher veterinary costs of caring for an older pet. You’ll always be notified of any changes before your new price goes into effect at renewal—one year from your start date. We’re committed to clearly communicating information about rate changes in advance of renewal.

When does my coverage go into effect?

Our base plan coverage typically starts 15 days after the policy effective date, and coverage for Preventive Care starts the day after the policy effective date.  See policy details for full information regarding waiting periods.

Can I have more than one pet on my insurance plan?

Yes. You can enroll multiple pets at one time or add pets later. Each pet in your family will have their own policy with a separate premium. For each additional pet you insure with us, they will get a 10% discount on the base premium.

Where is my pet insurance accepted?

Your insurance can be used for treatment at any licensed veterinary clinic in the U.S. or Canada, including treatment from specialists and emergency care facilities.

How does preventive care coverage work?

If you chose to add preventive care coverage to your plan, it covers a list of services with set annual reimbursement amounts. Claims for covered preventive services can be submitted the same way as other claims. You can view all the details about your preventive care coverage in your policy by visiting the Member Center.

If you don’t have preventive care coverage, you can add it when your plan renews for a low additional cost.

What’s not covered?

Like all pet insurance providers, the plans we offer have exclusions, which are things that aren’t included in your coverage.

  • Pre-existing Conditions
    • Pre-existing conditions occur before coverage begins or during a waiting period. These conditions are not covered. However, with our plans, this doesn’t mean the condition can’t be covered in the future if the condition is curable. An injury or illness that is cured and free of treatment and symptoms for 180 days will no longer be regarded as pre-existing, with the exception of knee and ligament conditions. If a knee or ligament condition occurs before the coverage effective date or during a waiting period, any future ones won’t be covered.
  • Cosmetic Procedures
    • Our plans do not cover elective procedures, such as tail docking, ear cropping, and claw removal.
  • Breeding Costs
    • Our plans do not cover costs associated with breeding or pregnancy.

You should make sure you understand the exclusions of any plan you’re considering so there won’t be any surprises later. We work hard to keep our list of exclusions to a minimum. You can look over a sample policy to get the full list of exclusions.
