What is a credit union?
A credit union is a not-for-profit financial institution that is owned by its members and run by a board of directors made up of credit union members. As a not-for-profit, excess earnings are returned to the membership in various forms (such as lower interest rates on loans, dividend sharing, higher savings rates, or lower fees, just to name a few). Credit unions are insured just as banks are, but instead of the insurer being the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, credit unions are insured by the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA). Both organizations are backed by the United States federal government, and insure accounts up to $250,000.00. (For more information, please visit the NCUA website.)
