The full retirement age, or FRA, is the age at which you can receive full retirement benefits from Social Security. FRA varies depending on when you were born.
Benefits increase the longer you wait to retire up to age 70. However, claiming benefits before your FRA will permanently reduce your benefits.
Learn more about retirement age on the Social Security Administration website.
If your spouse claims benefits based on their own earnings record, they will be paid their own retirement benefits first. If your benefits are higher, they will receive an additional amount, so that the combination of benefits equals that higher amount. As a result, you or your spouse taking your benefits sooner may be more advantageous.
More information on spouse benefits can be found on Social Security Administration website.
